Early years

Oleg Vladimirovich Deripaska was born in the city of Dzerzhinsk, Gorky Region (now Nizhny Novgorod Region) on January 2, 1968. The future billionaire was raised by his mother, Valentina Petrovna, as well as grandparents. Father - Vladimir - died when his son was not even a year old.

Oleg Deripaska spent his childhood in the Krasnodar Territory. For four years he lived on the Zhelezny and Oktyabrsky farms, located not far from Ust-Labinsk, and went to school there. Helped older relatives: participated in agricultural work, supported the household.

In 1979 he moved to his mother in the district center. Graduated from school number 2 in Ust-Labinsk. Education

Oleg Deripaska graduated from two prestigious universities. He received his first higher education at Moscow State University: a graduate of the Ust-Labinsk School in 1985 entered the Faculty of Physics, studied at the Department of Quantum Statistics and Field Theory. Earned a reputation as one of the most talented students on the course.

In 1986 he was drafted into the army. He served in the Strategic Missile Forces in Transbaikalia, on the border with China.

On his return, he graduated from Moscow State University with honors. Business

Oleg Vladimirovich Deripaska started doing business in 1990. Together with classmates, he founded the "Military Investment and Trading Company" (hereinafter "Aluminproduct"), the profile of which was to supply Russian metal for export. Deripaska used the money he earned to purchase a controlling stake in the Sayanogorsk Aluminum Plant in Khakassia. Managed this enterprise as a General Manager. This was the beginning of the success story of the future billionaire.

In 1997, the businessman founded the Siberian Aluminum industrial group (since 2001 the company's name has been Basic Element, Basic Element), which, seven years later, took its place in the TOP-10 of world aluminum producers. Subsequently, it included a number of diversified assets, in particular:

  • GAZ Group, the largest Russian automaker;
  • Ingosstrakh Insurance Company;
  • Basel Aero Airport Holding Company;
  • Construction Corporation Glavmosstroy;
  • energy holding En+ Group.

The group also unites other metallurgical, mining, construction, aviation corporations, as well as agricultural and banking companies. Over 200,000 people work in BaseEl . Today Deripaska is the chairman of the Supervisory Board of Basel.

In 1999, he became Deputy Prime Minister of the RSPP (Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs), which unites representatives of government organizations and commercial structures. 

In 2000, cooperation between Oleg Deripaska and Roman Abramovich began: they consolidated their assets - Sibal and Sibneft (Krasnoyarsk and Bratsk aluminum smelters and Achinsk alumina plant) - on the basis of which Russian Aluminum OJSC was established ( RUSAL). In 2004, Deripaska bought Abramovich's share. Three years later, the holding absorbed its only competitor, SUAL, and a Russian businessman with a fortune of $28.6 billion became the richest entrepreneur in the Russian Federation and ranked ninth. a line in the global Forbes ranking.

In 2008, Deripaska attempted to merge the capacities of RUSAL and MMC Norilsk Nickel by buying out a blocking stake in Norilsk Nickel. He planned to create on their basis a large-scale metallurgical company producing aluminum, nickel and platinum. However, the project ultimately failed.

Oleg Deripaska has not been among the richest businessmen in the world in recent years. At the same time, the Russian Forbes list puts his name in 50th place among domestic entrepreneurs.

Charity

In 1998, Oleg Deripaska founded and headed the charitable foundation "Volnoe delo". The businessman directed about 11 billion rubles from personal funds for the implementation of his activities. He provided support to universities, theaters, museums, monasteries in more than 40 regions of Russia. Over the years, the organization has implemented over 500 charitable programs.

In 2014, Deripaska spent several hundred million dollars from his personal funds to build facilities for the Olympic Village in Sochi.

Volnoe Delo provided assistance to African states in the fight against Ebola. 

During the coronavirus pandemic, the entrepreneur invested in the construction of a number of infectious disease hospitals for various regions of the Russian Federation.

Private life

Deripaska was officially married from 2001 to 2018. The businessman's wife was Polina Yumasheva (daughter of the former head of the presidential administration). They have two children - son Peter and daughter Maria.
